Many industries still rely on mainframes including many banks, airlines and insurance companies. According to MSN, many of these companies are looking to add AI resources to their systems and they are finding it easier to move the AI to where the data is (the mainframe) than to move customer data to the cloud where the AI reside.
For banks, analyzing potentially fraudulent transactions must be accomplished in milliseconds. “You can’t go off to the cloud, go do a search, go do a generative AI query, because it will just time out.”

IBM is the current leader in Mainframe sales with over 96% of the Mainframe market and has seen a 6% increase in sales in the quarter ending June 2024.
